See how you or your company can learn how to innovate using Lean Startup principles at Intuit’s Innovation Catalyst University — a two-day, hands-on course in everything Design for Delight. For the first time, the class is open to external individuals, leaders, teams, corporations and nonprofits and teaches participants to get out in the field, talk to real customers and use innovative tools to solve big customer problems.
Extending its innovative culture beyond company walls, Intuit trained its first batch of innovation catalysts from outside the company. Six external representatives graduated and plan on inspiring their teams with insights about innovation.
“It is a life-changing event,” said Vince Kohli, a recent graduate of the IC program. “When [you change] people’s lives with what you develop here, that’s an impact that drives you.”
Materials taught to external participants are identical to those used for employees. Why? Because D4D techniques have transformed individuals, teams and internal organizations since 2009.
“We’re proud of our innovative culture and we want others to hear about it and be a part of it,” said IC Leader Wendy Castleman. “Why wouldn’t we want to share our special sauce?”
Hundreds of companies reach out to Intuit every year hoping to learn its innovative methodologies — some have even replicated its programs. And while revamping their company culture, Intuit also learned a great deal from other startups.
“Much of what we teach is available elsewhere but we’ve curated the information and tools in a proven way that we are confident it can be effective,” Castleman said. “It was inspiring to watch as the newest ICs became empowered to take control, talk to customers and develop deep customer empathy. The same moments that are meaningful to Intuit employees are just as powerful for others.”
Graduate Neetu Raorene works in STEM education for girls and said the experience was “awe-inspiring.” She hopes to be more empathetic when solving problems. New IC Heather Abbott is also eager to ignite organic growth and passion for products to help better connect with her customers.
A Certified Innovation Catalyst program is also in the works, which will provide training for people who have gone through the IC program. Once certified, members can join a larger community, have access to further training and materials and interact with members from all over the world.
