Intuit just launched the Intuit Innovation Institute, a place for businesses to learn how innovation best practices, like design thinking and lean startup, can work in real organizations. The Intuit Innovation Institute (i3) teaches leadership, techniques and how to put them into practice and gives tours of the Mountain View headquarters to show how innovation permeates throughout the company.
Intuit Innovation Institute was born out of an overwhelming number of requests from outside companies who wanted to benchmark and learn about how Intuit created a culture of innovation that results in great products.
“Others recognize that we’ve completely transformed our company with these innovation practices and they want to come learn our special sauce,” i3 Leader Bennett Blank said.
Intuit’s innovation transformation has been well documented in articles like the Harvard Business Review’s article on The Innovation Catalysts and books like The Lean Startup by Eric Ries and The Innovator’s Method by Nathun Furr and Jeff Dyer. Previously others could only read about the tools and methodologies that Intuit used to ignite transformational change. The introduction of the i3 means that companies can experience those innovation practices for themselves with hands-on experiential classes.
What really sets the i3 apart from other classes and workshops is that it is going beyond theory to demonstrate with examples how innovation tools can work in one of the world’s leading technology companies.
“Until [i3], no one had been able to explain how to leverage it to drive innovation and transformation inside a well established and successful company,” said Hamish Gow, a professor at the College of Business at Massey University who traveled from New Zealand to take the Catalyst College course. “[The course] answered a lot of questions.”
Currently there are three courses designed to fit different needs: Catalyst College, Innovation Leadership and Innovation Tours. Catalyst College is a three-day, immersive, hands-on workshop which teaches the same tools and techniques used by Intuit’s own innovation catalysts to drive grassroots innovation in all aspects of the business. The Innovation Leadership course is offered for CIOs and innovation leaders who want to benchmark their innovation practices and learn how to transform company cultures. The one-hour Innovation Tours in Mountain View are open to anyone interested in learning more about Intuit’s Design for Delight innovation philosophy and how it’s reflected in the company.
